RØUTE FIELD TESTING

RØUTE Base Layer Review

First Impressions in Real Riding Conditions

When we design or test any piece of kit at RØUTE, it has to work in the real world – not just on paper. This base layer has now seen a good mix of use on both roads and trails, giving us a solid feel for how it performs in everyday riding conditions.

Conditions & Setup

It’s worth being clear from the start: this base layer hasn’t yet been tested in really cold conditions. Instead, it’s been used in cool to cold weather where layering and temperature control actually matter.

For most rides, it was paired with a fairly thin Acerbis jacket rather than a heavy winter shell. This made it a good test of how well the base layer works without relying on bulky outer layers.

On the Bike

Overall, the performance has been very good. The base layer does exactly what it should – it keeps you warm without overheating. While riding, I did get warm, but never uncomfortably hot. Importantly, temperature was easy to manage; simply undoing the jacket was enough to regulate airflow and cool things down quickly.

This balance is key, especially when riding mixed terrain where effort levels constantly change between road sections and trails.

Comfort & Feel

Comfort is where this base layer really stands out. It’s soft, comfortable against the skin, and easy to forget about once you’re riding – which is exactly what you want. There’s no restriction of movement, and it doesn’t feel bulky under your jacket.

One small but underrated benefit is how nice it is to put on before the ride. On cold starts, when you’re getting ready and setting up the bike, it helps take the chill off straight away rather than feeling cold until you’re fully geared up.

Final Thoughts

This base layer has proven to be a solid, comfortable piece of kit for road and trail riding in cool conditions. It keeps you warm without overheating, manages temperature well, and is comfortable both on and off the bike.

We’ll continue testing it in colder conditions, but based on current use, it’s a reliable layer that does exactly what it’s meant to do – simple, effective, and comfortable.
